From Kristen Gillenwater, friend of the officers and Westerville resident: 11 months ago 2 of our WPD officers were tragically shot and killed in the line of duty. My friend, Megan Owdom-Weitz of Megan Lee Designs, and I created the #WestervilleStrong shirt (my profile pic) in honor of these men and as a way to raise money for the families. To date, you have given over $24,000 which is completely amazing.
I come to you again, asking for your support for our police department. I have made this post public in hopes that you will share this so that we can see this need completely funded to alleviate this financial concern for the department and families.
Each year in May National Police Week (May 12-17) pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
There are several activities planned at the National Police Memorial in Washington DC every year during this week. In 2019, Tony Morelli and Eric Joering's names will be added to the Memorial Wall.
It is the hope of the officers from the Westerville Police Department that they will be able to attend this part of the event (May 13-15) to honor their brothers in blue and support the families of Tony and Eric. They plan on boarding buses to DC on Monday to attend the Candlelight Vigil and return on Wednesday after the reading of the names of the 2018 fallen officers. (Other PD will be protecting our city as they did in 2018 after the shooting. We will be coordinating meal drop-off for them in the coming months).
The WPD Honor Guard will be there for a few days longer (May 10-16) as they act as escorts for the Morelli and Joering families, and other families of fallen officers. The cost to send the WPD Honor Guard and officers is $25,000-30,000. This covers only bus and hotel fees. It does not allow for any food allowances.
